What is an air soft gun/rifle and what do I need to know before I buy one?

My sons wants one and I don't know much about them.

What do I need to know before buying one for him.

For the record, I haven't made up my mind whether or not I will buy one, but I'd like to get some advice/opinions to help me decide. Thanks!

how old is your son?....if he is under 9 i wouldnt recommend getting him one unless he is responsible enough...but make him wear sunglasses or goggles when playing trust me you dont want to get shot in the eye with one...they arnt dangerous if you get a spring or battery operated one dont get him one that uses co2 and also if you look on the package somewhere it will say fps do not get one over 400fps and also the higher it gets the more powerful so just judge by that on which one to get and they shoot little plastic bb's its a lot of fun to play and stuff as long as he is wearing glasses or goggles and he doesnt have a gun that may hurt the other players (depending on the age) if hes 12+ then there wont be any problems with it being too powerful as long as it is a airsoft gun not a bb gun...you really want to make sure of that because i bb gun can hurt someone and a airsoft gun will not if it is under 400fps
