How do gas pumps know how much liquid is passing thru them?

How do they measure the amount of oil I am pumping, ie the flow?

It's called a flow meter. As the gas/oil passes by the meter it registers on the dials on the pump. Because the nozzle is 10 feet away from the flow meter it is set so that what you pay for is what you got.
