Here is a question on preservation of materials etc..

How long would a book stay in perfect condition if it were placed in a regular living room and not touched? How long would it take for the materials to lose their colour, or the writing to fade, or the book to lose its condition?

50 years? 100 years? 200? Somebody please try and give me an accurate guess.

Also how long do DVDs last if not used? Does the data on the disk fade over time?

The length of time a book will last depends a lot on what kind of paper was used, there are a lot of books that are many hundreds of years old in collections and musems and the paper is still white and not brittle (except at the very edges where the air and sunlight gets to it). I have a friend who collects very old books and manuscripts and it is amazing how long-lasting, flexible, white and new-looking some of that old paper is! If cheap acid paper was used (like what is used in newspapers, cheap romance novels, etc) it turns yellowish within a few years and eventually gets brittle. Not sure about CD's. DVD's, it seems with most of these data storage formats, that the data winds up lasting longer than the popularity of the storage method!
