What do people wear under board shorts?

I know this is such a weird question, but I need to know. Does anyone in California or another surfing state know what you are supposed to wear underneath board shorts?

Been surfing all my life and found that spandax biker shorts work best. They are similar to a really thin wetsuit, tight to the skin and help preven rashes that you board shorts give you from rubbing against your skin. Also, they help keep you a little warmer.
